View Full Version : Peeling paint
This is sort of a hardware question, but the paint on the wall behind my 30 gal HOB filter is starting to sag and get air pockets. I have the lid of the filter on, but it doesn't help. How do I prevent the moisture from ruining the wall? Thanks!

I haven't had this issue...how close is the filter to the wall? I would think that if there is enough clearance, moisture wouldn't be an issue.

what's on the other side of the wall??
the tank should not cause an issue if the wall was properly prepped for paint.

key phrase there, properly prepped. It could just be that the tank has nothing to do with it, and its peeling because someone didn't bother to do the job right the first time.
I guess I've been taking walls for granted :) The filter is about 3 inches from the wall and I'm not sure what you guys mean by "prepped." How can I fix this?

:iagree:
remove old paint prime and paint..
but..look for moisture in the wallboard/sheet rock.
if there is any water trapped in the sheetrock you will have a tough time getting paint to stick.
that;s why I asked whats on the other side of the wall?
could be coincidence that you see paint peeling..I suspect either improperly prepped wall(latex paint is water based) or water was trapped prior to paint.
it is possible that the other side of the wall could be getting moisture too and this seeps thru sheet rock and will lift paint..
shades of terrible things here:eek:
 indeed! On the other side is the outdoors. Strangely, the problem spot is right below the filter and not along the entire wall. I'll check when I get home tonight.

If you have fiberboard or wood siding on the outside. Look for a nail that might be sticking out a little. Just hammer it back in and it will take care of the problem. Course, it could just be bad paint.
