o.k.

i know its not. its (i think) a parasite or a bacterial infection. they look exactly like whiteheads. and only covering his head.

i have been reading and cant seem to find anything that matches this description.

so any guesses? also what meds would be best in this situation?
also, i am going to do a water change now, but i am unsure if i should QT. all of his tank mates are scaleless (catfish) and seem to be uneffected.

Thanks

I would treat the whole tank..

Sounds like Ich ;)

I treat this by lifting the tank temp above 82 and adding aquarium salt..

Read up on Ich ;)

I treat the whole tank when ich strikes as if it is on your fish it is all throughout your tank waiting for the next available host ;)

essh. its not ich. its far too big to be ich. they are large raised white bumps on his face. ich looks much more like white pepper. i walked in my house and saw them from across the room.

edited to add: the lights just went off and they appear to be surrounded by red swollen tissue.

Ok. Post a picture then. Post a picture or give a more accurate and VERY detailed list of symptoms..

You have yet to even name any symptoms beyond white bumps and white heads and raised white bump on head.. That is very vague .. help us to help you ;)

How is the fish acting.. how is the water??

Temp
and other params...

sorry guys. it has been a while since i have been on here, and even longer since i have had to deal with any sort of illness.

my jack is acting totally normal, eating, swimming around and even chasing other fish. yesterday he had a pinkish raised bump on his nose that i thought was a run in with the reflectors above. now it is a large white bump about the size of human acne surrounded by red inflammation.
. there is one above his eye, his nose and another on his cheek. this is all there is right now.
my water changes are every 7-10 days without fail. no new fish additions in months.
temp: 81.5
ph: 6.8
ammonia:0
nitrites:.05ppm
i am out of my nitrate indicator liquid. this one i do not know, but given my routine, i find it hard to think it could be high.

Personally... I don;t have run ins with disease for a long time as well..

BUT A couple months ago I adopted a healthy looking SB Gold saum. It came down with what sounds to be the same thing.. The dang thing popped!! The GS died..

Then my Vieja Syn came down with it.. I culled him and haven't had any issues since.. BUT.. If you are going to try to save him...

CLOUT IT OUT .

If this doesn't work I am at a loss for you. As I seen no way of curing before it went to my prize babies.. So i culled anything that looked like this was the case.

A picture would help to determine if its a soft tissue injury, or an infection, or a now infected soft tissue injury.

First couple of days I'd do a large large water change daily and see if it began to improve. If not...time to consider medication.

No one is questioning your capacity for thinking. We're just sharing thoughts.

No apology needed.

...;)

edit : a further thought - look up pictures of 'hole in the head' or hexamita and see if it is similar to what you've got.

If it is bacterial, hopefully you have access to Maracyn or similar antibiotic.

i managed to get a photo of him this morning. the other side of his face is worse, but if you can see the one above his eye there, i think its a pretty good indication. also its hard to see but the one on his head has popped and now looks like a hole.
