I am setting up a 150 gallon tank for a birthday gift and need some help choosing a decent filter setup. Here are my specs

150 gallons
5 Blood Parrots 2-3"
1 Jack Dempsey 4"
1 Firemouth 2"

I have around $500 to spend on filters, cannot do a hang on back filter as I only have about 2.5" from wall.

I was thinking of just getting two Eheim 2229. Would this be my best option. If I get two can I hook them inline or will I have two outlets and two inlets from the tank????

Any better suggestions would be great.

I have heard that the marineland c-series filters are very good as well. I think the c-360 would be appropriate for this tank. Want to be my new best friend??? That is ONE GREAT birthday present! I am going to move this to a section to get you more filtratoin advice.

I used a wet-dry when I had my 150 set up on its own, but to do that you'd need HOB overflow boxes which sound like they wouldn't fit. I'd go with two canisters. I've heard good things about the C-360 series also but never tried them. I'm a big fan of the Rena XP3s as well. Eheims are also usually a good choice...never used them myself but they have a great reputation. I wouldn't hook them inline, i would put both intakes toward the middle and the returns at the ends to promote good water flow.

Just because I have them and like them I'd go with Rena Canisters. You could get two XP4's for that price and it would be plenty. Run them separate though, I wouldn't run them in series if I were you. The inlets/outlets aren't to bulky at all, 4 can be spread out easily.

I'd go with 2 XP4s as well. Easily within budget and they are easy to maintain. Eheim and Marineland also have good reviews, but I've not used them myself.

FYI, my B-day is coming up. lol

Either 2 Rena XP4s or a Fluval FX5.
