Do I use sealant to glue tank frames on? Or something else

So I got a free old tank from craigslist. The frames are falling off. I'm going to spray paint them too since they are made to look like wood and it doesn't match my decor. So I think I'm either going to rip them all off and spray paint them, or tape up the tank real good and cover with newspaper and spraypaint them after they are glued on.

Well do I use sealant to glue the frames on? They are plastic-like. Or should I use something else?

Also, how well do they need to be on - can it just be a few touches of glue so that aesthetically they look fine sticking on, or are the frames actually essential to tank support?

Aquarium-safe silicone sealant is just fine, and is what the manufacturer normally uses. If you have a tank large enough to have a crossbrace, then it is crucial that the frame be solidly attached. Otherwise, it's just a matter of aesthetics and guarding the sharp edges of the glass.

It's a 50 gallon, no cross brace. Good to know that I shouldn't have to worry too much about it. :)

what if your tank was 210 and had a cross brace and the frames are disintegrating, how do i fix that?

replace the frames asap is what i would do. Try checking your lfs and see if they can special order new frames for you.. or check out that same link i posted above and try contacting that seller.
