I bought this 14" cat as a bullhead, b/c I wanted a cat this size that would stay this size. After doing a bit research with the help of Google, I am almost certain that it's not a bullhead. I read that one of the most distinguishing characteristics of a BH is the rounded tale. I think it's visible in the pic, but this cat does not have a rounded tail.
I am hoping that it's another species that maxes out rather small. Like 18" max. but if it's not it will likely pose future problems.

That is a bullhead. "Rounded tail" is in opposition to the forked tails of blue and channel cats. What color are the barbels on the chin?

I'd agree with Bullhead. Only because I spend alot of time watching Blues & Channels and it's neither of those.

OK, so it's not Ameiurus natalis. My best guess is that it is a black bullhead (A. melas), but it is very difficult to distinguish this species from the brown nullhead (A. nebulosus) without resorting to counting the gill rakers.

Due to the fact that A. nebulosus is often misidentified as as A. melas, I'm going to say it's an A. melas. Like Notophthalmus said, positive identification is going to be difficult. Luckily, they both max out a similar size, with A. nebolusos slightly, but not significantly smaller.
