My friend from work dumpster dives (conjures up a pretty gross image, I know, but it's really not that bad!) from retail stores and has found me some cool equipment that petsmart threw out. He found a rena xp1 canister filter, and it is in good shape, but is missing all the tubes/hardware that are supposed to come with it. The actual filter still has the two intake and outtake parts on top. Can I cheaply rig a system of tubes for the filter, or do I really just need to break down and buy the accessory tray for 60.00? I'd really rather not do that...

Plastic tubing and PVC fixtures could be used. I'm not great at explaining DIY stuff, but a visit to your local Ace with proper measurements should help. Basically you need the right diameter of flexible tubing that you can connect into a drilled PVC pipe (spray bar). You may want to ask that this get moved to the DIY section, there are some real whizzes that hang out there.

they use 5/8" tubes I think 3/4" fits as well
go to home depot or lowes and get the drink dispenser tubes, I think they're like $5 for 6 feet.

as far as inlet into the tank, you can rig something I'm sure with pvc, just get nipple(?)to put the 5/8" tube to pvc and then you can have full range of all the pvc fittings you can find..
