I read somewhere that I can use Excel instead of having to put together a CO2 system.

So can I use Flourish Excel for CO2? (well, Carbon, but whatever)

from what I understand, nothing<excel<co2.

I've always heard it explained that if CO2 is a 10/10, Excel is a 6/10

So it doesn't 100% replace it, but it does help.

No replacement for Co2 - but Excel is certainly much better than nothing!

That's exactly what Flourish Excel is designed for; so basically, yes you can use it as an alternate means of providing carbon that the plants would otherwise receive from Carbon Dioxide.

I do agree with the others here, however. It's not as effective as CO2, but makes a good substitute or even supplemental source of carbon.(not to be confused with activated carbon that you'd put in your filter.) Yes, a lot of people are confused about that.

I am using it due to an apparent genetic defect that prevents me from creating a decent DIY CO2 system. It seems to be working well for my needs(you can read my tank journal to see the setup I am using it in) and it has a nice bonus of being an algaecide as well..

Excel also has another property that isnt advertised. It makes one helluva anti-bba/hair algeacide. I used to use it on an 80gal before CO2, and it worked very nice, but some plants are sensitive to it. Now I exclusively use it on 2 heavily planted 20gals, and plan to on a 75gal that I'll be recieving in 2 weeks.

But one of these days, I might just grab a 20lb tank of CO2 and run a manifold, but Excel lets me keep my 20gals truly low-tech and low-maintenance.

i even hate diy. i have excel to help with algae and use it on some tanks from time to time. i much rather use a co2 tank.
