Okay, here is a post of a tank I redid if you want to look at it
http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=161540, that they moved from Freshwater DIY section, to the Marine DIY section. My question is what would you recommend for Equipment for that tank? I was going to go and get this tank started as a Freshwater, but now I'm interested in the Salty. Wetdry system would have to be custom made for the stand to fit, so that is not an option. Mostly what gear do I need for tank (filter, etc...), not the Maintenance gear (RO system, test kits). Or would it maybe better to get a Biocube 29 and use that to start my saltwater tank.

1-1 1/2 lbs of live rock per gallon. Best protein skimmer your pocket book allows. Those will handle the bulk of filtration. I also keep a canister on mine SW tank for mechanical and even some chemical filtration. (requires frequent cleaning as not be a nitrate factory) Aragonite based sand as a substrate seems to be what is recommended.
Lighting will be dependent on what you want to keep.
That is a place to start. I hope it helps.
OH! BTW seriously consider a refractometer over a hydrometer, much more accurate.
