Too much carbon?

What is the link between HITH and carbon? I have always heard that too much of it can cause the illness, but I believe that its only a factor when combined with poor diet and water quality. I have two baskets of carbon in my FX5 and want to ensure that im not doing more harm than good. Can anyone help me?

There is really no link between the two. No one really has evidence of what really causes HITH. The carbon is really not necessary I haven't used it in over 3 years unless I have had to remove meds. The amount to use varies with each situation and there are so many factors it's not worth the headache to find the right amount to use. To somewhat answer your question it is probably not enough carbon to worry about anything.

akapaul is pretty close.. the cause of HITH has not really been found..tho more research is being done.
HITH and HLLE are similar but different
I personally do not believe carbon should be blamed for poor water quality(associated in some cases with HITH and a protozoan which seems to be present in these conditions)..the problem with some who use carbon(activated) they are lax on water changes and use the carbon to 'clean' the water. in reality while it helps it cannot do what water changes can,

As has been said, the jury is out on the cause of HITH and HLLE other than it is some bacterias. Carbon is good for removing some dissolved impurities but uses effectiveness very fast. It can also become a nitrite factory due to compaction. I do not use carbon either and have had no ill effects.

As it was already said there is no actual proof the carbon contributes to hole in the head or lateral line disease. Poor diet and water quality should be most to blame...
