As my tank has been set up for a year, I thought it time to give it a darn good clean. One of my ball valves has been slightly dripping for a bit and the my left hand side overflow hasn't worked properly for ages.

Lunch over, I set to it.

Removed the skimmer, the return pump, the R/O top off and phosphate reactor and dismantled and cleaned all accessible parts of those.

Next step, undo ball valves. Oh, they're very tight!!!!

Next step, get monkey wrench and untighten - oops, twisted too hard and ripped the top seals!!!

Water now coming down outside of pipe work at the speed of a very fast drip/slow gush!!!

Next step - call LFS

Bless him, he pops in, in between jobs that he's had booked for ages takes a look and tells me I've done a fantastic job at wrecking his handiwork:grinyes:

I always say if a job is worth doing it's worth doing properly:grinyes:

The good news:

We've managed to control the leak (hopefully) so that it is only dripping into the sump. It had been tracking all the way around the stand and dripping everywhere.

The bad news:

We have to totally strip down the tank and reseal it.

The good news:

He isn't going to charge me (I love my LFS).

The bad news:

He needs a whole day to do it at least.

The good news:

He undid the ball valve of the left overflow and pulled out 20/30 snails/crabs - that'll be why that didn't work, why my nitrates have been a problem and why my crab/snail population has depleted. Overflow now works:grinyes: Oh and I did apologise to my Trigger as I had half wondered if he had caused the disappearance of them:lipssealedsmilie:

The bad news:

He can't do it for another week as he's doing a display at the local flower show and doesn't want to start the tank in the evening because he wants enough hours to make sure it's OK.

The good news:

Funnily enough, I'm still laughing!!!!

That's been my day today, roll on tomorrow:grinyes:

Yep! I'm already on planning on adding more sand whilst I'm at it. I wouldn't mind the rescaping except that we only did it a couple of months ago!!!

Ah well - back to the mopping!!!!!

WoW, take pictures, I used to change through hull fittings on boats that were in the water, so I'm curious how he will do this in a tank

Without seeing your setup, I can only speculate. But if you have the room, you should be able to plug the hole with a cork, to do clean up of surface. When it is time to install the new fitting, use a 4"pvc pipe with a gasket at one end, and push it firmly to the bottom.

Pull the plug, reach in and dry things, drop the new fitting down the pipe and tighten it up, easy as pie LOL You would need to people for this LOl

Just a bit of rearranging but not draining.

Edit: OOPS, your using a hob right?

I leave things like this to my LFS because I'm not that technically minded, but I'll have a go:

Where the overflow goes through the bottom of the tank is a gasket, when we first set it up we siliconed it just to be on the safe side, when I was "mending" the pipework yesterday I twisted it too hard and managed to turn the whole overflow pipe, dislodging the gasket and the silicone.

No it's not HOB.

It's absolutely soaking and it's laminate flooring:eek:

Still smiling though!!!!

a friend of mine's tank started to leak one day so this is what he did. he used a pressure locking baffle cut to size. moved rock and sand away from corner of tank that was leaking and wdged in the baffle. drained tank water to just below the height of the baffle then siphoned out the waer from the leaking side of tank he sectioned off with the baffle. dried everything up with towels----resealed the tank-----let silicone set up per directions on tube. took baffle out--filled tank back up and has not leaked since

GOOD LUCK CPD!!!

Experience has nothing to do with it - I'm just good at clumsiness:grinyes:

Here's a few piccies to help understand the story

The amount of towels I had to use to try and mop up!! All washed and dried:grinyes:

Where you can see the greenish Epoxy on the thread section is wherre the water is leaking

57929

The bin bag (marvelous invention!) that is helping track everything back into the sump.

This is the back, right hand corner of the main tank. You can see where the pipework goes down, which is behind a great big pile of rocks:grinyes:

Sorry you had the issue, but bravo for staying upbeat! The way you wrote it up made me laugh and feel guilty about it all at the same time. Best of luck going forward!
