I have a 3 1/2 yr. old Frontosa and when he was small, he liked to hide in pvc pipe or a cave. Now that he is full grown, he just hangs towards the middle-top of the tank. Is there anything I could put in my 110 gal. tank for him to go in? Most of the other fish in the tank are smaller than he is and go for the caves, behind rock or slate. Do the frontosas need some kind of place to get into?

i have alot of shelter for my frontosa in form of building caves out of creek rock in my 120gal but i will be like you when mine reach adulthood as for my guys are only 2 years at 5 to 6 inches but hey i would still use creek rock as caves even when there older..

I have seen some unattractive ones out of large diameter PVC piping.

What are the other fish coexisting with your frontosa? They typically enjoy shelters.

Of note, a 3.5yr old frontosa, while perhaps newly-matured, is far from being full grown.

whats max size of a frontosa ..and is the female bigger , smaller or same size?

Fronts reach 14" with no definite difference in terms of size between the males and females. Males tend to be larger than females but it will depend on the fish.

Sexing is going to be difficult. The fish don't start showing signs of sexual differences until about 3-4" long, and even then venting is the only 100% way to tell and you need a mature fish for that. That is why groups are very important (along with the fact that they naturally live in colonies)...it insures you a mix of sexes.

thank you jpappy can i get a aman yep hence the reason i have 7 fronts i want to get rid of a few when they mature but like jpappy said they are colony fish, i have lelupi's and brichardi's along with other fish but my fronts arent that aggressive only what fits in their mouth when my brichardis start to breed i am sure they push the fronts around..
