just got this a few days ago from a friend, what looks to be some sort of fern with 3 leaves per stem. compared with the java fern, it's lighter in color--more yellowing-green than deep green. texture is exactly the same, rough and crispy, and the plant structure is identical--leaves growing from rhizome. it also grows relatively larger and taller, with leaves averaging 4-5" long. seems to be fairly prolific too, already spewing out 'fernlings' on the top side of several leaves.

so far i'm liking it. the leaves have a nice shape, and a fairly dense foliage can be created with only a few stems. but because of its potentially large growth, it may be tough to aquascape in a small tank. anyone else have experience with this plant?

Looks like a type of Bolbitus.

If you are successful with Java Fern, you shouldn't have any problem with them.

I think it is much harder than a Java fern, if you can get it to grow well at all.

When I first tried one it sent off may shoots as well. They all struggled and I eventually got rid of all of them.

The Kasselmann book says it is not suited to submersed growth and many posts on the APD back that up.

It's growing and growing well in one of my tanks with 1.5 watts/gal. No problem at all.
