Hey guys,

I have a load of java ferns. I don't fertilise (tank of messy cichlids = plenty of nitrates) or use Co2. Lighting is 2 x 25W in a 46G tank.

I'm not bothered about the fact that the fish nip away on it. However over the last couple of months I've got big ugle black root system everywhere. The ferns are wedged into/onto rockwork and are all well attached.

Should I trim these ?

Did I read somewhere that this is a sign of excess nutrients ?

Any advice welcome & thanks :)

No if you want to maintain the quantity of plant which you now have.

I have not even had any luck removing the plants from a rock in order to trim and reattach without tearing up the plant to some extent but if you do not mind kinda starting over you could detach the plants, remove the objectionable roots (this will probably require removing the rocks and scrubbing them with a coarse brush) and then reattaching the plant fragments.

You did not indicate that algae was present and hence not excess nutrients but you have plenty in order to experience the plant growth which you are observing.

I'd say trim the roots. If any leaves turn yellow remove them. Sometimes java fern is just too happy. We used to remove handfuls, grocery bags full sometimes, regularly. No major dent in the java, lots of happy plant newbs.

Yes, you can trim the roots with no ill affects.
I trim mine, but I don't go wild on them.
