I'm going to the store tomorrow to pick up some plants/new light for my 10g, but have a question on gravel. Currently, I have normal "aquarium rocks" in the bottom, approx 1 inch thick. Will plants grow/root in this? Should I add something to the rock I currently have, or just get something new all together? Thanks -

Referring to the substrate, you could add Pure Laterite when you make the hole to plant the plant (lol), I've done it and it works okay because it contains a little iron which is good and sometimes aquariums lack some, especially ones which have seen no fertilizers. You should definitely have 25w-36w of light, and I also recommend flourish tabs, they're an excellent addition to your substrate too.

i was planning on getting something around 30w for the light...will i need a co2 set up or do you think i can get along okay with just using something like flourish excel?

In 10g I think you would do OK with just excel, co2 could be a little too much. Don't wanna kill your fish.

Excel would be a really option, in that small volume of water, a 250ml bottle will last a long time. And with slow growers, I would just dose 1mL every other day. DIY CO2 will work too, but I feel its a pain compared to dosing out excel.
