Aloha,
I'm a nu-b but have had success with hi-tech small planted aquaria. I'm moving up to a 40 Breeder tank and would like recommendations for a cannister filter. I've read about EHEIM, FLUVAL and RENA filters and they all seem to have something to recommend.

I'm looking for performance, durability and -very important- user friendliness and ease of use. Price is secondary.

Would someone be kind enough to give me his/her favorite along these criteria?

We use Eheim canister filters on our tanks as they are easy to use and the replacement bits are reasonably priced and easy to get. We had fluval but replaced with Eheim as the fluval canister filters just didn't seem as good and in the UK bits can be hard to find. Never used Rena filters as the price is a bit much for us.

Sometimes you may need to replace things if they break due to general wear and tear and if you can get replacement bits you don't have to throw away your filter you can just fix it. We have had to replace the imprepellor(not sure thats the right spelling but its the bit that spins round like a fan) on our filter.

Marineland "C" Series canisters all the way.

I have had excellent luck with my rena xp filters. They are very user friendly with the quick disconnect and self priming.

I like Eheims, the little beasts can run for months without maintenance, and can hold alot of bio-media and floss. Also Hot Magnums make awesome water polishers and can take the place of a powerhead for circulation.

But I think on my next canister purchases in a month, I might try out a pair of Rena XP3s, they are incredibly cheap compared to a Eheim Pro2.
