hello again everybody! i had a 33 gallon tank a while back had it all setup for a beginner and everything was great! well i got board with it and sold it! the good news is i now have a 55 gallon tank! i am picking it up today! this is the situation! welll my neighbor has had it for about 1 year, it has 2 cardinals in it, and a whole bucnch of fake rock and sand, it has a normal long strip light and 2 douple filters and a power head! well a few days ago he moved to SC and now the power in his house it shuttoff and the tank is sitting there, so he told me to go get it and that i could have it all! well i just went down there and got the 2 fish and they are currntly in a holding tank and i am going to take them to the petshop asap! any way i got the fish out, now i am gettign the tank in a little bit, it is filthy, all 4 walls are all algea and grime, the water is clean tho! and i am throwing all the fake rock out couse it is filthy, here are my plans for the tank, my last tank was simple, i want this one to be alot more exciting, so i plan on haveing bigger fish, a yellow tang and any others that i cuold put ion there, i want lots of corals and and live rocks! well that is my new thing, so should i keep the water form the tank and then after the tank is clean put it back so i dont have to cycle it right?
thanks,
Shane

The water itself holds very little of the benefitial bacteria you need...
if there is any live rock, that will help, but, the sand will hold alot the bacteria, so save part of it...If its as nasty as the rest of the tank, use a portion of it to seed some new sand...if its all clean, keep it all...
make sure you have about 70 lbs of real live rock, then add a piece of shrimp, and let it decay...watch your ammonia level.
If it rises, you will need to let it finish cycling..if it doesnt, and the only thing that goes up is nitrates, you may be ok to add a fish...but add them very slowly, and monitor your water perams daily..
If you want "lots of corals" your lighting may not be enough, depending on what types of corals you choose to keep..
Sounds like a neat project, and i hope you have alot of fun with it..

Just clean it and do water changes to bring the nitrates down. I did a two month vacation, and my tank only got fed and watered. No cleaning, nothing. It is looking pretty good now.

In that time of disarray, lots of small critters came to life, and it would be a shame to kill them all. Just do a little at a time so as not to spike the params.

allright thanks for the info! i will ad pics and get a portfolio going on everything!

Welcome back....can't wait to see your 55 progress.
Is there any LR with the 55 set up? or are you going to have to add some?
Robbie

hey robbie good talking with ya again! no there is no LR in the tank yet, all i have is the tank and filteration! i found a 260W light for it for 100 bux, so i will have that, then i need everything else! i ended up ditching all the sand and water and decided to start fresh, but i think i am going to find some already cycled water! any thoughts on that? i want to get this done right but i want it to get going asap, so what is the fastest way i can get fish and corals in there? i know i have to have patience, i just want the fastest way, i am really excited about this and cant wait to get it going!
thanks,
Shane

You Can NOT CYCLE water!!!!!!
You must cycle the tank!!!!!

There really is no fast way, you just have to be patient. If you go to fast you will be wasting money. Coral you should wait at least 6 month after your tank has stabilized IMO if not longer.

ok, well i guess i will start from scratch all over agian, :(, but i am sure the wait will be worth it, i am not going to cheat myself on this tank, i am buying everything hich qaulity and i dont care if it takes 10 years to do so, my last tank looked good but everything was the cheap way out, so this is gunna be my pot of gold tank, lol
pics soon!
thanks,
Shane

can't wait to see your progress!
Just remember patience pays off in the end!
It won't tanke ten years, but i am sure it will seem like it.
