I remember my father having some fish when I was but a young pup (say 30+ years ago).... I have been having symptoms of high blood pressure and remember reading an article a few years back saying that a fish tank (looking at the fish swimming and the sound of the bubbles) help lower blood pressure.

So here I am, just got myself a 20g tank, filter, hood, and the whole 9 yards... And holding my breath that the fish do not die. I am waiting for the water to warm up enough to "dump" my fish in the tank... I bought 20 gallons of spring water for the tank. I know the chemicals in city water will kill the fish.

Just wondering if I made the right choice by starting off with getting 3 glow tetras and 3 mixed fruit tetras. I liked the way they looked, nice color, simple fish. And I figured if I was going to make a bunch of newbe mistakes I would get "cheap fish".

I don't want any fancy exotic species. I'm just looking for a simple but pretty colored fish that are easy to take care of.

Any suggestions?

Waiting for my cat to discover (and get bored of 5 mins later) the new additions to the family.

Welcome to AC! I would suggest reading the sticky about Cycling a fw tank in the freshwater newbie section. You can use tap water, but need to use a dechlorinator (prime is the best, in my opinion and experience). I would suggest making a thread in freshwater newbie for more advice. Hope you enjoy the site and look forward to seeing your tank grow!

Hi there and welcome to AC. Fish are a good choice :D i find them very relaxing. You should take msjinkzd advice and have a read about cycling your tank. As you already have the fish it sounds like you are going to be on a fishy cycle. So dont go buying anymore fish for a while yet, as you need your filter to get established with a good dose of good bacteria, to enable your filter to be able to cope with all the waste that your fish excrete.

Good luck and hope you enjoy your tank :)

P.S dont dump the fish in, you need to acclimatise them. I generally float the bags for a while to allow them to become accustomed to the water temp, and add a little of the aquarium water a little later to the bags, and release them after about an hour. :)

I know the temp difference between the water in the bag and rumping them in the tank is a bad thing. I try to give about 20 mins or so before letting the fishies run free. :)

Friend of mine at work said I should get some sort of algea eater and a few snails. (picked them up on the way home from work along with 3 more fixed fruit). Three days, 10 fish, 2 snails and so far only 1 has died.
