20 would work for a tiny fancy, but a 30 is best for a fancy and LOTS of filtration

A 20 long is really too small for goldfish. However, a large group of White Clouds would look spectacular, and you wouldn't need a heater or an excessively large filter as you would for a goldfish.

I agree...30 gallon is usually the recommended minimum for even the smaller goldfish.

A school of whiteclouds and some native sunfish would do well.

Fishy_fun, even fancy goldfish can grow to 10-12 inches long, easily. Thats why it is important to have a large tank. Plus, you're not just looking at what fish can physically fit into the tank, but extra water volume is important to provide some wiggle room for water changes. You don't want to have to change water every day.

you could try to get some rosy red minnows (usually sold as feeder fish), I have a school of them and they look like mini goldfish! plus they breed pretty fast, so you will have live food for your other fish

It is not about the number of fish, but the size. These guys can hit fist size for the body alone, then add fins, the fact that they are schooling, and their bioload and you are looking at a pretty big tank to keep goldfish in permanently.
What other kinds of fish do you like?
Do you already have the 20long?

you can get sunburst platies or something similar if you want orangish fish

If you get a 30 you could easily keep one of the slower, more delicate varieties - ranchu, lionhead, celestial, or even a moor would do well. They're harder to keep in groups, so if you're determined to have a goldfish, it's a good opportunity to keep a delicate fancy.
