I am sooo excited. My friends moms colleague bought a "male hamster" from petsmart for her classroom. She puts the new "male" hamster in a hamster ball and it won't roll around. She wonders whats wrong with it and sees to little bundles of skin in the hamster ball. SHE was having babies. Since my friends know me as the animal freak, my friend called me and asked if I wanted one. Of course I said yes and then I told him to explain to his moms colleague how to care for them and make sure the mother doesn't eat them. They are only a few days old so I have to wait about 21 days before I can bring them away from mama. Its a classic syrian hamster and it was a "litter" of 12! I'll post pics as soon as I get the hammie.

BTW if I the babies don't make it, my parents said I could still have another "rodent" or maybe more fish! But If it didn't work out, should I get a hamster (dwarf, robo, syrian?) or a gerbil. I don't have the money for the filters and such for a fish tank. :(

Dwarf hamsters are fun if you are ready to commit to weekly cleaning, sort of like a fish tank. I had a really friendly one that would climb all over me and let me hand feed it. Unfortunately the little guy got sick and died after the watter bottle leaked and triggered mold to grow. Next one was a PITA and wouldn't let me get near it. Best thing to do is start handling them early.

i had a gorgeous russian dwarf hamster - he lived for three years! i think he may have died from old age. anyway, make sure you let them run around for a few hours a day and give them loads of veg and seeds. also be careful because "wet-tail" is a very common cause of death in hamsters - if he gets wet he may catch a cold and not recover, get a bottle of vitamins from the petshop and put a few drops in his food. ok, enough of ranting lol happy hamster keeping :)

A while ago, I was in a small, local petshop and was checking out the cute little gerbils and their babies....and then I noticed one mother gnawing on something red. It was the head of a baby with nothing but a little spine left. I let the worker on duty know and she didn't believe me at first, then freaked out once she saw what was going on. She had another employee separate the mom from the rest of the litter...it was a trip to remember.

Its common for animals to eat still births that may have been the case with the gerbill.

Nutrients thats why most animals also eat the afterbirth or placenta after labor because its full of nutrients. And labor is a very vigorous process which takes alot out of the mother who in turn needs the nutrients.

Congrats on the babies. If u need any advice on hamster babies and breeding pm me. This is a picture of one of my russian dwarf hamster pups. They will be two weeks this mon. Just started opening there eyes. Just remember dont touch any of the babies until 12 days after they are born. And leave them with mom for about 16 days. If u dont remove the male she will have another littler at 16days. They get pregnant right after birth. fYI ;)

p.s i have a snake but i would never use my hammies for snake food. I find them all good homes :)

I love the dwarfs, they are my favorite. I have an old one right now they usually only live 2-3 years. The robos are called that for short actually they are Roborovski's, they are the smallest and fastest of all hamsters commonly kept as pets. If you have never had a hamster I would go with the Syrian hamster. They are a larger then the dwarf species, slower and a little better tempered. Gerbils are a good pet. Their temperament is better then the hamster's. At work our dwarf hamster just gave birth Friday. We believe she came in pregnant, because we only carry female hamsters. OOPS
