Hi all,
I am returning to an old hobby after about 20 years. I used to have several planted tanks and breeding Discus. Eventually I lost interest after a heater malfunctioned and parboiled my discus. :omg: As fish in other aquariums died I tore down all of my tanks. Now I find this old interest is reawakening in me and I have a new little 10 gallon tank that is already fairly well planted and in the middle of cycling. (I am low tech and am setting up this tank like I always have in decades past, letting nature take its own course with a natural cycle.)
All I can say is that things have changed a lot in this hobby! I am a plants-person (was a buyer of plant material for a major retail nursery for 10 years and a life long gardener) and I am fascinated by all the plants that are now available to fanciers. I am also blessed to have a very good Fish Store very near to where I live... even though my own collector instinct finds their plant selection, although varied, well stocked with a great turnover, somewhat lacking. I bought a sword plant today that was not labeled (the only plant in the shop that was not labeled), and they were not too interested in getting the name for me from the shipment that came in yesterday. sigh. Now the research begins.
I look forward to learning from this group. Thanks for being here.

I want to thank each and every one of you for the warm welcome!
I will post a picture of the new plant a bit later today. (I always want plant names, in my yard and in my aquarium. It is too bad that some places just seen to not care.)
Here is a picture of my new tank. We shall see how it goes from here. :dance2:

LOL, well, I may have shrimp, but I am not going to have a single snail! :grinno:
The tank is cycling now and has finished with the first cloudy bacterial bloom. Since I am a low tech sort of guy, I am letting nature takes it's course, as it always does, and I am slow adding fish... but there is one albino long fin Bushynose. In the end the only fish I will have will be that one, a few Corydorus habrosus and some Cardinal Tetras. Maybe in six months I will get a pair of Rams. We shall see.
I spent about two weeks looking for that driftwood, and then boiled it for quite a while. I like the larger piece on the right with the huge hole in the middle!

You could consider something like ember tetras in place of the cardinals. They are super super lovely and school very tightly. Also, because of their small size, you could fit more in the tank for a larger school. They would look awesome with some pygmy cories or I actually keep mine with albino bn's. Shrimp would workk as well. Your tank looks lovely, I really like the variety of textures in the plants and the driftwood is a very nice piece.

I believe my store has the Ember Tetras! I am lucky that I am near a great Tropical Fish store. Always wanted to have a Cardinal tank, but the Embers may be the way I go. A little research shows they were discovered about 15 years ago, and I have not had a tank in 20 years, so... so much has changed.
I have never had shrimp. What would you recommend for this tank, which will have a pH of about 6.5?

neocaridina are very very accepting of a wide range of ph. That being said, you are lucky to have source water that could house the caridina species as well. I really like snowball (neocaridina) shrimp and have recently become a big fan of tiger shrimp. There are soooo many kinds available now that its really up to you and what sort of color you are looking for. Cherry shrimp are the most readily available and affordable and are considered a great starter shrimp for this reason. If you kknow a specific color you are going for, I could recommend shrimp better that way. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the nice words!
I added a couple of plants and took a new picture this morning. My water is now crystal clear!
I need some easy care red plants with a finer texture that will not melt in my tank, thinking some sort of stem plant. (No CO2, 26 watts of CF light at 5000K in a 10 gallon tank.) Please make a suggestion if you have an idea
One of these days... fish. :grinyes:

This picture is not great, but it does show my first school of fish! :dance2: The colors are better than the picture shows, but still not as pretty as in the store. I suspect and hope they will color up more as they get used to their surroundings.
12 Ember Tetras. I need at least 15 I think...
