I really want a 50 gallon fish tank and i was thinking about making it a cichlid tank. So somebody told me that i should get an emperer 400. So i looked at them and not knowing what is a goood or a bad filter i figured i would just get that. So ive always have had filtration problems with my current tnak and it sucks. So i think im going to go with 2 emperer 400s. Is this a good idea?

An Emperor 400 is adequate for 50 and 55 gal. tanks. I have 4 of them and all are filtered by E-400s. Some are well planted tanks and one is mostly Malawi fishes. I do , have Hagen 201 powerheads with the little quick filters on them hidden in the opposite end of the tanks....mostly for added circulation , but a little filtration can never hurt.

So if i double them up does tha mean they could filter a 100ga? Because if one can filter a 50 ga and im going to get two that would be good filtration right?

I'm still partial to AquaClear filters. I like the quality of their HOB's, and they were very quiet. I'm using canisters now due to live plants...

No, 2 E-400s would not be enough for a 100g tank. 1 for a 50g tank is kind of stretching it if you are moderatly to heavily stocked. 2 Emp 400s and an AC 300 would be good for moderatly-heavily stocked.

It would be heavily stocked with cichlids and i dont know if cichlids prodice a lot of waste but i dont care eitehr way im getting as many filters as i can afford and possibly get in the tank.

I ran 2 Emp. 400's on my 55 gallon Oscar tank until "the boys" outgrew the tank. Oscars produce alot of waste and are messy eaters. The 400's did a great job keeping up with the demand. My water parameters stayed well within acceptable limits.

I have a new idea of 1 400 1 canister and a biological with an egg crate over it to stop teh fish to dig it up. I figured it would get the tank filtered from all possible areas.

Andy, an Emperor filter is a biological filter. Maybe you would want to get 1 E-400 and a filstar 1.

Okay, I have 1 quick question about an E400. i got one in special deal this weekend that is used. I was doing some cleaning of it - tube, impeller, etc. - and noticed what looked to be some kind of lubricate on the 2 'bearings' on the impeller. Never noticed this on the E280's we have or any other filter.

Is there supposed to be some kind of lubricant? I left it on there because it was working before with it and I didn't want to mess it up.
