Here's my old filter, I am going to sell my EMP-400 and as you can see I need to clean it first so it doesn't look like crap.
What's the best way to get rid of all this white stuff and to clean the rest of the filter to get it ready for sale? There is algae on my filter also that I need gone too.
I tried a hand held steamer and it does nothing at all.

Elbow grease and a bleach solution. To remove the white mineral deposits get a clean, plain scrubby likeyou use on pots and scrup it off. Vinegar may help remove it.

I tried using a coarse side of a sponge scrubbing super hard and it doesn't come of at all, it's almost like it's part of the plastic. I tried scratching it off with a wire and it takes of more plastic than it does the white stuff.
Is there something I can dissolve it off with like some CLR or a blowtorch or something? lol

I would soak it in vinegar. scrub and soak, you can even add a pinch of baking soda that will help also and is safe to use.
Soak it in a vinegar solution, to help dissolve build up minerals, and scrub. Just post pictures when you sell the item, so there is no confusion or issues over wear or build-up.
sell it for a good price and you wont have to clean it :P

How much you want for it? I need one. If it's cheap enough, you won't need to clean it. :D

$25 plus shipping the way it is now. $30 after I'm done cleaning it.
I have the top cover for it also but it has a small crack on it, not sure if it is noticeable or not because I don't use it.
I was going to sell it locally at that price because the pet stores sell these filters for about $80 bucks :screwy:

I thought about that, but then I thought about what they might think after seeing it in person while it's dry :jaw-dropping:. People get more mad when gas prices are so high and they drive our for something that looks like a POS :grinno:

Thats happen to me, I've gone out to look a saltwater setup, and the acrylic tank was literally garbage from all the deep scratches, that dont show in a photo. I just stared at the tank for about a min, and said no thanks and left, and the trip was 30miles+ each way.

$30.00 + shipping is more than new.
Soak in white vinegar will remove 90% of it. In desperation - swimming pool acid will do a better job. Just rinse thoroughly. I use it on all my used equipment (plastic), rinse, and let dry before putting into use. Never caused me a problem. I let it dry at least 2 days before use.

I might have to check out some of that swimming pool acid if it doesn't cost to much, probably to expensive for my needs though. :shakehead:
You will be real lucky if you get 30 bucks for it even after much scrubbing. I have seen those online for 40-45$ and aquarium stuff loses have its vaue as soon as it gets wet. You can always try of course; you might get lucky, but may be better off keeping it around as a spare.

I've had people wanting to drive 45 Min's out to buy my old 10 gallon tank for $10 lol I felt sorry for them and told them no :screwy:
I'll probably just sell it for $25 lots of people don't shop around for what they buy and you get it the same day buying it from me rather than having to wait. I would never buy it used for this much but others will.
