What virus software are you running? What Operating system? I use several different virus scans. Avg free is a pretty good one and can be dl'd for free at download.com and I've had good luck with housecall at http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ . Give these two a try one or the other should work and there both free.

perhaps you should shut the computer off.

What i do when these problems occur is boot the computer with knoppix, (assuming you know how to use linux) and delete the infected files. Since knoppix is a different OS the virus will not be able to work in this OS.
Still AVG is a good antivirus and should be sufficient if you update regularly. Use zone alarm fire wall (freeware for the basic personal use version), it will automatically rate websites so you know if you are clicking a suspicious likn.

before you ruin whatever reputation you may have, you may want to get off the forum and google the virus you have so you can safely remove it.

IT people Google the virus because 9 times out of 10 there is already a tool available to remove it. I have done this a bunch of times.

OP would have probably found a tool to remove the virus in the time it took to create this post and then post a few replies to it.

Huh.. I did'nt know you could just google a virus and find tools for removal, I always assumed you had to go through a virus killer program like norton's or the like. I learned something new today.

Yup, its a really handy way to get rid of a virus. Its not a replacement for something like Norton though, as you need to know the name of the virus in the first place (usually your anti-virus program will tell you the name) and then if the program can't delete it head to Google, type in the virus name and you will either get automated tools (usually on symantecs website) or forums with instructions on how to remove the virus.

Free Online Virus scanners are often malware. The fact that your system got a virus means that A) you don't have an anti-virus software, B) it is out of date, C) You have McAfee or Norton

Before trying to remove the virus you MUST Boot into Safe Mode and turn off System Restore. You also need to delete ALL temp files especially Internet Explorer Temp Files. Failure to do so will cause your system to be re-infected.

1. Proceed with virus removal. 2. When finished Run Spybot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html) or A-Squared Free (http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/) which are very good spyware removers.

You also may need to run a rootkit remover depending on the virus you have.

For anti-virus software (free) Avast (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html)AVG (http://free.avg.com/) or (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html)AntiVir (http://www.free-av.com/en/products/index.html)

When clean, reboot and test system BEFORE turning System Restore back on.

I already have that on my computer, but whenever it tries to get rid of the virus, it gets an error and closes. Ah well, I'll just destroy my computer and get a crappy vista instead. :grinyes::grinyes::grinyes::grinyes::grinyes::grin yes:

ohh the best way to get rid of a virus is to put your laptop in a microwave and leave it there for 10 min for a desk top, remove the motherboard and hard drive and place them in the oven for 10 min or until the fire department shows up

Here's a way to clean about 98% of dirty windows systems, I personally use it on people's pc's most of the time there are viruses/adware/trojans present without the need to find a specific virus fix/patch for it (because most of the time if there is one there are others).

Run these one by one, making sure to reboot your pc between runs (also do these steps in safe mode, without the adware being locked by the system):

First download and run VundoFix (click remove Vundo when done, alot of spam sites use it):
http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4

Then download and run ATF Cleaner (check all other than Cookies and History):
http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1

Then download and run Dr.Web CureIt (start it, let it autoscan, then when it's done click Settings>Change Settings>click Actions tab and under Malware set everything to 'Delete' click Apply and OK then start the scan (click the green play '>' button), it'll scan and auto delete all malware for you), this is probably one of the best virus cleaners for windows if regularly updated (which also removes rootkits):
http://www.freedrweb.com/

Then download, install and run SUPERAntiSpyware (when done you can choose to uninstall it):
http://www.superantispyware.com/

The only way to be sure it is totally clean is to delete all web browsers and connection settings.

I have and use the following my entire family does as well.
Adaware
Spybot
Ccleaner
Registry Mechanic
Avast
Trend Housecall Online

I always run them in that order. Trend will catch anything Avast might miss.

Do each step in between reboots in safe mode (ie step 1>reboot pc in safe mode>step 2>reboot pc in safe mode etc...).

Sorry, I tried to do all of that stuff at the same time before you posted and I got a blue screen error. The only accounts that don't seem to be infected on my computer is the guest and this other one. I might have to use those until this thing gets destroyed.
