im torn between starting an African cichlid tank, community, or central American, i have a 55 that's housing my jacks but there going to be moved to a 75 as they grow which will leave me with an empty 55. i could always use it to grow out EBJD but id rather not. (i already have a tank setup for that) so what do you all think i should do? if you have any suggestions for stock there all welcome :grinyes:

you are going to need a place to put all of the fry. anything less than a 55 wont work for long if you are going to be raising more than one batch of fry. plus, you should really have a tank ready for another pair just in case something happens in the 75.

Personally, I would go with a community of some sort. One fish in a tank is boring to me. I would use plants, so most robust American cichlids would be out. I guess it would depend on what's available. I would rule out anything that won't thrive in my tapwater, select a must have species, then build around that. Any ideas yet? Planted or not?

African tank of course :). Even if you know nothing about them, post your stock (or fish you like) and setup info and we'll go from there. Check here for different species:

Forget the cichlids. Time for a planted river setup with rasboras, barbs and loaches.:headbang2:

I love large community tanks. You really get to begin to see more natural behavior with schooling fish and I find them so much more relaxing then tanks where the inhabitants are always nipping at each other. The South American tank could be similar to a community tank too. Get a pair or 2 of rams or a harem of apistos and a couple schools of tetras...very nice!

Okay, so for your Tang list, I would go with the Transcriptus over the Regani, because the Transcriptus doesn't get quite so large. The Brichardi would be fine, and if you get siblings, chances are good of keeping more than one pair together. I'd go with Altolamprologus Calvus over the Compressiceps, simply because I think the black and white varieties look better than the Comps. To fill it out I would look into Cyprichromis Leptosoma, or Paracyprichromis Nigripinnis. Both are schooling fish that would fill out the top half of the tank nicely.
As for Tropheus I've heard best results come from a species only tank of 75 gallons or larger. They are mean fish, and they need a large colony to minimize aggression, but they are gorgeous fish. The Frontosa would be pushing it as a single fish in a 55.
It looks to me like you've selected some of the nastier of the Mbuna, though I'll let someone a bit more knowledgeable comment on that.
I'm not well versed in Angelfish, but I would think a few Rams, Angels, and a school of tetras ( neons, cardinals ), would look nice.
