I honestly dont know If I should squeeze out my filter sponge.

The BB or some type of algae is about an inch high - growing off of the top of the sponge.

Should I squeeze it out(in tank water of course) and get all of the algae/bacteria off of it? Or just let it be?


Another question: Activated carbon, if its new right out of the box, should I put it straight into the filter? Or is rinsing required?
 
I'd clean off the sponge. The benificial bacteria shouldn't be affected and it's almost certainly algae or gunk. Rinse the AC or is will create "dust" in your tank.
 
Safer to use tank water or just treated water in a bucket.
