What are your thoughts on the Penguin Emperor 400?
For a 46 gallon bowfront freshwater tank. Great deal on
them right now at Foster & Smith web site ($37.49) but do
they do a good job and are they reliable?

the penguin and the emperor are different models from marineland.
I have the Emperor 400 as one of the filters on our 65G goldfish tank, and i have to say that i love the filter, I run double filter media in it and it is great.
canisters are great, but for that price I would get it. I love mine, and it has ran on our 65 for 8 months with out so much as a hicup. it needs to be primed, so pouring some tank water in as you turn it on will do the trick.
maybe the best biological filter out there.
I love it.
when we get our 120, I am going to get a canister and still run my trusty emperor 400.

I have 2 and I would never use any other HOB again. They are great IMO.

EDIT- I meant anything other than the Emp 400

I ran a 65 hex marine, fowlr, for about 3 years on one and never had any problems with it. You cant beat them for the price but are not as flexible as a canister.

Marineland Emperor 400 and Marineland Penguin 350 are very similar and have many interchangeable parts. Other that the GPH difference, they are both effective filters. Comes down to the wallet and preference.

I would recommend using 2 filters if possible. Maybe be an E 400 OR P 350, and a smaller hob, or canister, I have 2 on the 45 .........
