While cleaning my tank and adding new water I somehow managed to pour the water in to fast and smack the heater against the back of the aquarium and broke it. ZZZZAP! I saw white smoke and herd this sizzle. At first I thought I shorted my moter in the filter, and then I noticed the broken heater. All 4 Zebra Danio's, 2 Cories and 2 ottos made it thru the experiance with out any problems. Two zebras appeared to want to mate after that, but I think it was the drop of tempeture.(LOL) Learning experiances, Hmmm.

When my boyfriend and I came home this evening he heard a pop coming from one of our fish tanks. Looking into the tank he realized the heater had broke. Immediately we got the fish out and put them in out other tank. (We were just holding the fish in the tank until they got a bit bigger) After getting the fish out he noticed brown gunk had come out of the heater.
We are planning on running the tank with no fish to get rid of any remaining residue and then buying a new filter so no traces of any chemicals will be put into clean water. Just wondering if there were any long term effects to your fish. Thanks for any help!

My friend has had several heaters break on her because she forgot to turn the heater off before doing water changes. After the 3rd one she switched to submersible :idea2:

if you removed the fish from the tank to a clean one, they should be ok. i would watch them for a few days and do at least a 50% water change in the affected tank, and let it run for several days with filters to help remove any left over chemical. also once the fish are added you might add an extra gal or so to the water changes. good luck (it will also depend on how long the fish where in the chemical)
