Hey folks!
I'm glad I found a nice forum where I could get some information for my freshwater project I have in mind.
I've always had a fish tank of some sort in my home since I was about 7 or so.
I never really took the hobby of aquarium keeping too seriously until several years ago, a roommate and I (who were under the influence of those cigarettes that make you see things in tie-dye) walked by my hometown's only saltwater aquarium store... Years later I have a 110g mixed reef tank in my dining room.
The other day I was given a 40gallon breeder tank that I was considering turning into a planted saltwater tank of sorts. I went to the local aquarium store and saw a really beautiful planted community freshwater tank. I decided the 40g would make a really nice planted/community setup.
For right now, I am waiting on the silicone to dry on the tank (it was once part of a large system and had been drilled on the bottom). I had a old plab of glass that is supposed to be part of a 10g's hood that I simply put over the drilled hole and put silicone all around...
This tank will be placed in a room where I can control the amount of sunlight that comes in. The tank will be put on an "in-wall" desk in my office. The cabinets above the desk will prevent me from using pendant lighting - so I have already bought a low-profile 36" florescent strip light and reflector - I'll have no issue with everything fitting under the cabinets.
It looked like there was a "sticky" thread about cycling for freshwater... I think I can say I am familiar with cycling and what it's all about from my reef-keeping experiences. I've learned that patience is the key to keeping aquariums, so I'm not really in a big rush to get this going... but I do want to get some good information regarding choosing a good substrate. "Less technology, more biology" was the rule I tried to stick by with my tanks. I'd like to pick some certain location to try to imitate with the inhabitants in my tank. Really I would like to start this tank off the right way - and have a few avoidable issues as possible...
Whew - this ended up being much more than a "hey folks" - but oh well, nice to find this place - and I hope to get some good information from you all!
