I have decided to make a moss wall for my 55 gallon tank. Right now I have tank, stand, undergravel filter, flourite gravel (about 3 inches) and a diy co2 system. I plan to house ghost shrimp, neon tetras, angelfish and khuli loaches. I will pick up lighting and any other equipment in the next week but want to keep it as inexpensive as possible. What are my options for type of moss? an inexpensive lighting sytem? opinions

thanks

Your going to need a strip of fiberglass window screen about 8'x2', about 12 airline suction cups, at least 1 WPG, and a ball of moss the size of a basketball. ;)

u can buy the suction cups at any dollar store, i bought mine there, got 50 perfect sized ones for a dollar and they all come with a detachable hook

the store also has nearly everything for a diy project

One day, a basketball sized chunk of moss will be $1. Then, we will all be able to afford moss walls. This will be the day when I see a Bristle nose Pleco dancing the macarena.

personally i would use one of the other mosses as well. maybe weeping moss or something. there is two ways to do it the cheap way that tanks time or the costly way. cheap way is buy some let it start growing then pull it super thin on the wall. it takes time to grow in but finding someone with a bunch of this or that moss might be a little hard.

he meant you dont need to start with it full and just let it grow in with what you have. anyone can start a moss wall with a one inch strain of moss. it just takes time. the bigger you start with the faster it will be done.

I checked out xmas moss and think its the one I like most. I try not to take cheap way anytime, rather do something once well but inexpensive is allways nice when I pich the ideas to my wife. also wondering what fish or inverts would enjoy this wall the most? I would love to have it utilized by shrimp or something fun to watch

I wouldn't use Java Moss. I made a moss wall in a 26g and IMO, it doesn't attach itself to stuff the way everyone claims, not to mention it's really messy if any pieces break away.

I just spent about 3 hours removing all the moss from one of my tanks. I have about 1/3 of a 5gal bucket filled with Moss right now.

Won't the Angels make snacks of the neons and shrimp?

I am sure the angels would eat the shrimp, thats kinda my idea. If the wall provides enough cover perhaps they will be able to reproduce at about they same rate they are eaten. If the angels do eat the neons I have a 29 gallon that they could move to but I wanted a to try them just for the color

The neons will be gone in a day, sorry to say, if the angels are big enough.
Does moss grow faster if you use an LED light?

Why not go with cardinal tetras instead of neons as they are a little larger. Shrimp most likely will not survive that stocking.

I vote for xmass moss. I find java moss to be to fragile and always found pieces floating. My xmass moss doesn't tear at all even if I run my fingers through it.
