View Full Version : Stupid? Sand substrate question

I am planning a new 29G tank, and I am thinking I will use fluorite black sand as my substrate. I am actually really excited about it because I love the look. Last night while I was daydreaming about my new tank (MTS anyone?) suddenly I thought "How the hell am I going to clean this!?"

So my question to you all is:
"How the hell am I going to clean this!?"

I assume gravel vacs will just suck up the sand due to its small size and weight, so how do those of you who have sand, or fluorite black sand, clean up your substrate?

well you sort of swish you're hand over the substrate so the junk goes up into the water column then such it up. it actually stays down relatively well and personally i don't vacuums

swirl the vacuum over the top of the soil. I never suck up any black flourite sand when I use my gravel vac

The swirling motion will kick up the junk to be vacuumed.
