my mom bought a 10 gallon tank form petsmart today and some decorations, plants, and gravel....so i set the tank up and startd cycling it today.....so my moms nagging question is what and how many fish can i put in this thing...i told her to start off with maybe 3-4 tet's...small ones....and maybe a 2 inche oto cat.......so im asking you guys for help because i have been out of the fish hobby for so long i have forgotten a llot of the knowledge every one here provided for me months and months ago.....but i am back and will be posting and reading!thank you!
She could probably be best off with 2 different species in that tank. Ottos need to be in groups and generally do best in heavily planted tanks that have been set up for awhile. I generally suggest 3 Cory Catfish for the bottom and then a school of 5 tetras or small barbs. Suggestions would be Silver Tip tetras, White Cloud Mountain Minnows or Cherry Barbs.
Another choice of fish would be Platies that do well in a 10 gallon tank. They are colourful and quite hardy, though they do breed rather easy and I don't know if your mom wants to deal with that.

how about a betta for some colour and personality, I use to keep a single betta in my bedroom 10g and they're always interesting in their cute habits, although you're mum sounds like she would like as many fish as possible, personally I love white clouds, they're hardy, active and quite beautiful, IMO especially when mature. does the tank have a filter/aerator if not that would I guess limit your possibilities somewhat.

Hi,
To start off with in a 10 galon, I'd but no more than 2 fish(max. 1inch in current size). After the tank is settled and everything is going well, then you could slowly start to add fish, but with a 10 gallon they can't grow to be big fish and I'd say no more than 5 fish in total for a tank that size. Good Luck and have fun,

It's not so much a question of inches per gallon as it is what fish you intend to keep in this 10 gallon. If the fish in mind are small, thin fish than up to 10 fish is usually recommended for a 10 gallon tank (1 gallon per fish) but even with thin fish, its a matter of which ones you are talking about. Certain species desire different areas to swim in, which in turn could also mean they require different amounts of room too! :)
