I read somewhere in a string that the Marineland bio-wheel filters were not good to use for a planted tank due to out gassing and that the Aqua Clear was a much better alternative. Just learning about planted tanks but for a HOB filter do I need to reconsider AC over Marineland???

I've never heard this about a bio-wheel, but that doesn't mean it's not true. I have an AC 30 on my planted 20 long, and all the plants are thriving. I recommend AC filters every chance I get. Hope this helps.

Bio wheels are excellent for oxygenating water and also at stripping co2. AC's have a more gentle return and therefore contribute less to co2 loss.

Aquaclear have a gentle return compared to a bio-wheel. Plus allow for better media options, and lack cartridges.

I have bio wheels on all my tanks and in theory that may be the case that they gas off co2 faster. IME my plants and fish have done better since the adding of bio wheels to my planted 3w pressure injected co2 tank.
