I was just given this Cichlid from a friend, he had no clue as to what it is either but needed to re-home it.
Thanks for any help in the id of this fish and also if you can tell if it's male or female that would be helpful to.

lol, I know the Oscar is an Oscar, but now I'm thinking that the mystery fish is a red devil too :)
I had a suspision that it my be a devil but since I only have a small red devil I wasn't sure.
Thank you pittbull, hopefully my mystery has been solved :)

Yeah the orange one looks like a red devil if that's the one you are talking about. But I don't know much about cichlids.

Thanks again everyone, and well the rosy's have been in my tanks for almost 2 years now and so far nothing has ever bothered them, but this "devil" may decide they look tasty and try them out. So far he/she hasn't seemed interested in them but may have eaten some small jd's that my friend had also given me, as I haven't seen them in the last little while. (hopefully they are just hiding out lol) Of course my biggest oscar (Big Mamma) has been worried that her beau "Big Daddy" has eyes for the she devil and has been putting him in his corner evertime the Orange beauty comes near lol
Nobody is allowed to flirt with her man I guess :)

In my opinion you have a hybrid. That looks close to the FH family of Hybrids.

:iagree: very odd colouring for a true RD.

:iagree:also -- looks like some kind of FH hybrid, probably with some RD/Midas in it though.

Yep it looks like a FH x RD cross to me.
