Has anyone tried the Rods food? My lfs says its great and it's $20 a pack- I think its 8 oz. They were having a sale, I asked if it was also on sale and they said no, that Rods has a set price and it can not be lower or they could lose the line. I don't know but that kind of sounds like a line but maybe not.

BEST... FOOD.. EVER!!!! Once you start using Rod's, you won't ever use another type of food again. I have been feeding fish for 14 years now, tried about every food I could get my hands on over the years, and most foods by themselves only feed certain types of fish, but Rod's feeds them all. Rod's comes in 3 flavors, the normal "meaty" one that has been out for a while (about 80% meat/20% veggies), and 2 new lines, the Herbivore (more veggies, probably 60% veggie/40% meaty), and also a Coral line which is just very small particles of food. I use the meaty one because I don't have any Tangs, and also the Coral one.

They are correct, Rod's food is price fixed by Rod himself and LFS are not allowed to change the price.

thanks ace, does the label say which is which or is it the color of the label, my lfs has the orange label and I don't think it says meaty, etc. does the meaty have anything for the corals or do I need both , meaty & coral

Yes, the meaty does have food in it for corals as well so you really only need to feed one type if you want. 2 days a week I put in a little of the coral one as well just to have an extra boost of food for all my corals.

Meaty = Orange Label (Original formula)
Herbivore = Green Label
Coral = Rainbow Label

I just found this thread and would just like to share for informatioal purposes that "Rod" has 5 food blends out and available. They are "Original, Herbivore, Coral, Fish only and Predator" quoted from Rod himself.

Just a side note, I didn't think it was legal to price fix.

Tell that to Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Apple.. and the list can go on for days. If you are the only one that makes a product you get to set the price it sells for. As an example, if a store decides to sell a Nintendo Wii at a loss to the store just to get people in the door and Nintendo finds out about it they will ban the store from ever selling another Nintendo product again. Same goes for Rod's Food.. he says "Here is the MSRP you have to charge, if I find out your charging less I will not sell it to you anymore". He makes the product and the rules to sell it by. If you don't agree, you have a choice.. don't stock/sell/buy his food.

And yes, since my original post here they have expanded now to 5 lines of food like MASIV stated. I still think the "Original" orange label is the best.

I'm not sure if its really price fixing, more like a threat that if you sell it for a low mark up that the product will be yanked from you. in a way this should be followed by other companies in retail also to keep some places that I have seen that accepted cash only and sold at 10% above cost out of lower end locations. a retail outlet that has an up kept building, insurance and quality employees really needs to get more than 10% mark up ( but not the 200%+ markup that jewelry stores get ) in order to make the business succeed. we all probably know that a cash only business is not on the up & up. sorry if this seems like a rant.

Can this food be used exclusively?

Yup, you can use it as your only food source for all your fish and corals. That is one of the things that makes it so great. There is something in the food for everything.

As far as the markup on Rod's. It isn't much at all. I think it cost the LFS 12.99 for something they sell at $21.99. Shipping costs on Rod's is insane, but required because it must be kept frozen. So that $12.99 ends up being closer to $18.00 per item when you take into account shipping. Another problem for LFS with Rod's is it does last a LONG time.. I have 14 fish, and a $21.99 pack of Rod's lasts me 2 months, so a LFS doesn't sell a lot of it if they do carry it, which means they can't place larger orders for it because it will sit for many months in a freezer before it sells, not something you really want to do, have stock taking up space for months on end before it sells.

Thanks Ace, there's a new small shop in town and they carry it. May as well feed the best and forget trying to out think someone who has the formula down.

I would like to add a question on another food also, it's called cyclopeeze. I am trying this out also just to give a variety to the tank. This food comes in a frozen bar and when its thawed is very fine particles. Will the fish actually get full off the small particles or is this food really better for the corals and use a fuller body food for the fish or just simply stick to a variety of the Rods food? Thanks
