Hey Folks,

I got a Marineland C-160 canister a few months ago to try a canister. It has been working great and silent but, I keep getting an oily film on the surface that I assume is from all the new plasic and rubber. Anyone else get this? I figure it will go away with time but lately I have been skimming the top daily. I am conserned that the film limits gas transfer at the surface.

the oily look on the surface is acctually caused by lack of surface movement. this can be a problem with canister filters, for their outputs are usually under the water. HOB filters dont have this problem because the output drops the water through the surface, which keeps it stirred up.

if it is excessive, you may want to test your water parameters and feed a little bit less.

Well, the film isn't from the canister, it is a lack of surface agitation braking up the oils from the food you feed. Get a spray bar for the discharge and aim it more to the surface.

Ok thanks guys. I have always had HOB filters so I rarely got the film. I have been liberal with the food lately for some reason and have found myself fishing some back out. I was figuring that I'd play with the outlet to get it to hit the surface. I fed some frozen brine shrimp today so I will see if there is a difference.

THanks
