no question is stupid.... most UV sterilizers are great ive never heard of one being a bad thing for your tank

i herd that they kill good bateria i had my in the tank for a month and noithing whent rong but they are good for free floting bateria

I think UV Sterilizers cover up problems like algea and free floating ICH, it doesnt cure the problems that cause algea problems and it doesnt replace quarentining fish and treating problems with your new fish.
