what is the best way to do the above? Got too many baby acaras running around but there are so many places for them to hide/scatter when the net or siphon comes out I wind up catching one or two at the most. thanks.

If you have another tank then its best to put the adults in a different tank
Its easier catching a few bigger fish than a whole lot of fry
At Leasts thats what I think :)
Why do u wanna remove them as acaras look after there fry
Remove other kind fish but leave the parents with the fry
Lets see what others say
^^ I agree the cichlid watches over her fry.
But if you would still want to remove them do it at night after the lights been off for a few hours. Once you turn them on the fish are not as active and are easier to catch.
Another way is luring them with some food and use two nets.

what I've wound up doing is taking a 20 oz plastic softdrink bottle, cutting off the top and inverting it to make sort of a trap. put some food in there and big fish can't get inside but the little ones can and often have trouble finding the way out. I can pull two or three out per feeding this way. Gonna give some of the little ones away to friends. The parents, who were relatively placid before spawning, have also become hyper aggressive (understandably so) towards other fish (even non-threats like ottos) and even the plants.
