Not strictly necessary, unless you're removing some sort of pollutant or medicine. Some people run it routinely for various reasons, I only use it when absolutely necessary.
Is carbon really neccessary in a fish tank? The past fish tanks that I had, I had filters with the carbon in it. But both of the tanks I have now have filters without carbon. One has bioballs, and the other has a media made out of ceramic. Just wondering.
I use carbon all the time...:grinyes:

There is a lot of debate out there about the uses/effects of having carbon in the aquarium. Some people use it religiously, others see no need to unless they need to remove something such as medication.
