Will Chlorine off gas in a closed contained, the be exact one of those one gallon jugs you buy water or milk in. The residence hall I just moved into has water with a bit of sediment in it, so to make it drinkable I put it through a britta. I'm thinking of doing the same thing with my fish water instead of buying bottled water, which I've been doing hence the left over jugs.
Thanks
Matt

the top should be open to 'gas off' any chlorine, though eventually it will decompose into a salt. however, just because you don't like the taste of the tap water doesn't mean the fish won't like it. Just be sure to use a dechlorinator, just a few $ at the lfs. might be easier and cheaper in the long run.
what kind of fish? what kind of tank? any idea about your tap water parameters?
good luck

Be careful as well of chloramines. Most municipalities use this now instead of chlorine and it's much more stable than chlorine, therefore taking over a week to dissapate into the air. Totally agree with Fanman. Spend a couple of bucks on dechlorinator.

Ok sounds good I'll keep using the dechlor.
famman- I don't filter the water for taste I filter it for particulates, the pipes in the building are quite old and the water has a yellow tint out of the tap, but it's nice and clean post britta.
I have two tanks here at school, an Eclipse System6 and a System3. The six houses a pair of drawf cichlids and the three has a pair of Forktail Blue-eye Rainbows with 5 dwarf rasboras. Both tanks are lightly planted with low light plants.
I've attached a pic of the System 3
