My 2 of my gsp's have been swimming against rocks and other objects in the tank... it appears that they are trying to scratch their eyes. Its been going on for a few days and wondered if its something I should worry about. Their appetite is really good and i dont notice any discoloration... any suggestions?
from what I've heard it could possibly be gill flukes? idk how that effects their appetite but that can cause scratching, not sure maybe someone else knows more
Im not for sure but I do know that when my mollies got ich they would rub on the bottom of the tank. it wasnt very noticable just tiny white pin prick dots but i just used some melafix and they stopped after a few days
Me too. My salinity isn't very high yet, ive been slowly raising it since i got them from a fresh water tank at the store. BTW, when I do a water change i obviously lose salt, should I pre-salt my new water to the current SG before adding it to the tank?
yes, don't add salt to tank water to raise salinity. When doing a water change make the new batch of water and condition it and add the salt, I'm raising mine now also. I do a little math and see what my salinity now is and try to raise it by about .001-.002 .do a little math of what salinity I need to make X many gallons to raise the tank by the .001. Typically some people leave out the new patch of conditoned/salted water to allow oxygen/carbondioxed levels to settle, but i don't believe its as important with brackish tanks, more of a marine thing, not completely sure
prazipro is a very gentle medication for flukes (parasites in general). i had a pleco with body flukes and though it took several rounds, my pleco never lost his appetite or appeared unduly stressed from the meds (levimasole will cause your fish to be a little more stressed but is more aggressive for treating flukes). levimasole will also kill the gill fluke eggs which the prazipro wont do.
I had a similiar issue with one of my columbian sharks. I have found that medicine for the most part causes more problems then cures. Since your fish is "brackish" I would put it in a small tank for a few days and change the salinity. Keep the fish at the new salinity for a day or so and then bring the salnity back to match the tank it came from. I found that most infections which are bacteria based can't handle the salinty change and die off.
