Hello,
I'm disappointed with my wet/dry trickle filter that came with my 72 gallon planted tank. I know it's a good filter, but I'm having trouble keeping my CO2 levels high enough and I think this filter is the main problem. I'm also sick of worrying about whether the overflow will clog or some other thing happening, leading to a wet floor. I keep having to get a big bubble out of the siphon tube...don't know where its coming from since I don't have any air bubbles being pulled into the overflow. Bottom line...I'm sick of it!! :P
I'm looking at canisters, but they seem like they can be a hassle. Any suggestions on that?
I'm also looking at power filters. I've used cheapo Whisper filters on all my tanks (2.5 gallon to 30 gallon) with no problems what-so-ever. My original filter has been working for about 15 years (knock on wood!). What about a couple AquaClears or Emperors for the 72 gallon? And maybe a Magnum HOT for fine filtration? It seems everywhere I look, I find totally different opinions. Anyone use this filtration combo on a large planted tank?
Thanks!
Melanie

For a 72g tank I'd be looking at the Rena Filstar XP3 or Eheim Pro 2028. You can't beat a canister.

CO2 blow-off by a W/D is a function of the particular overflow design. It may be large or it may be tiny. But IME, HOBs are far worse. YMMV.

Canisters properly arranged can have the lowest CO2 blow-off.

I'll throw in some friendly advice, and that's to get the Rena Filstar xP-3 and the Vortex XL Diatom filter. You will then have superb filtration.... :)
