well i thought it was time to start a thread showing my tanks im doing some tearing down of some getting rid of some of the fish and redoing my tanks with a more natural look making sure the plants are all plastic not just silk plants people have used for tanks making sure the fake decor is not something fish will easily get stuck in and doing my best to use natural substrate though i have found to remove the old substrate really releases lots of bad stuff in the water which makes me even more want to use sand
here is my 55g oscar tank

Nice. I would prefer black backgrounds...

:iagree: A darker back ground would help set off all the colors in your tank and fishes, looks nice.......:)

ok since people have asked me about my columbian sharks that i rehomed here is a few pics of the tank i have them in i dont know what the volume of the tank its a homemade tank that i got from someone at any rate its more of a holding tank and the fish have ease turning and by the time they need the bigger tank i will have one set up for them

i got the scats as well from my lfs as they were a surrender i thought i would do a brackish tank before i tried to do a sw
yes i am aware of the size needed for some of my fish but i would put it this way
though my 4 month old daughter need a 2 year old snow suit in days to come she is still only 4 months old an when she needs the snow suit i will very much have one for her
what im trying to do is to put together a personal fish program of bigger tanks to rehome some of the very lovely fish that i have been able to get from people

i dont get what you are trying to say but those are iridescent sharks, another type of catfish they gets like 4 ft or something. colombian shark catfish are brackish/marine and get about 18inches
chefjamesscott
10-23-2008, 11:25 PM
what im tryin to say is that by the time they need a bigger tank i will have them built
one tank im gonna do in my basement is gonna be 4 feet tall 5 feet wide and at least 8 feet long
these three sharks were told to me by the person whos tanks i was buying that i needed to house some 6-8 inch sharks and when i got them i was rather looking going my goodness those are not 6 inches long but by this time he had them in buckets an the tank tore down so had no choice but to take them
what im saying is by the time they get monster size i will have a monster tank or two or three or four etc.....
being in business as i am gives me some room to do some things for example at my cafe i have 33g, 55g, 2 75g, 90g 180g
chefjamesscott
10-23-2008, 11:53 PM
i also have a 140 custom built that my glass dude is finishing off for me that i got from a guy when it ruptured its back seam its 2 feet wide rather than 18 inches
im just crazy enough to turn my home into a zoo where im going to build one tank in my basement that will run almost the whole length of my fish room which is 2o feet long
my wife an i have 7 kids and we decided that we would make our pets our social life we have birds and i could not stand to see them in cages only so we converted one of our bedrooms into an aviary which if i had not had to take care of a ex business partner who lacked integrity i would have finished off by now but i had to dedicate over 7grand to taking him out in the short term amongst other things
what im tryin to say is i have a passion for pets and im just a big kid at heart who happens to have come across some fantastic outcomes of life after slugging it out in the business world for the past ten years and im gonna do some insane crazy things in the arena of aquaria

what is so highly controversial about taking a rehome on a pacu that was in a 55g and putting it in a 180g with plans to eventually put it in my basement 1000g tank
or taking some sharks from someone again who had them in a 50g and putting them in a 75g or so
or taking my oscar who was in a 30g and putting him in a 50g with two other fish
what is so controversial about taking fish that came from other people as i purchased their tanks and then realizing the need for larger tanks go out an get 90g, 140g, 180g, soon to get a 300g going to build at least 2 tanks 500g plus
my stocking practices come from acquiring other peoples tanks an misfit fish and then doing my very best to get the needed tank size for them what is so controversial about putting a green terror in a 75g and giving him the tank for his own
what is so controversial about planning ahead for these fish that i have gotten from other people and making sure that when the time comes i will have the tanks that fit them
or what is so controversial about having a friend who has a 500g display tank in his restaurant where i coudl place the pacu if it grows to the size before i get my tank done or my other friend who has a in floor tank that is at least 700g
tell me vader what would you do
on the phone and by email the dude tells you he is draining his 55g tank and that i should have room to house 3 6-8inch sharks and a few others and when you show up in the bucket are these monsters would you tell the person to refill his 55g tank and put them back in what would you do
as for me i find bigger tanks as fast as they come available an buy them but saddly in gettting the bigger tanks there comes other fish so the need comes to get more tanks and thankfully some of my bigger tanks 180g for example came empty, 140g empty , 90g empty now what do you do when someone brings to your attention fish of a larger size that need a home and since you have bigger tanks you can place them
do you leave them in their respective 55g tanks , do you leave them as my new green terror was in the 35g at the lfs , what would you do
as for me i make plans to get the biggest tanks i can find for example the 300g tank that is 2.5 hour drive from here that is 10 feet long by 2 feet wide i try to broker a deal on it so i can bring it to town or i find a tank at pats pets which is another 160g and i cut a deal so i can pick it up next friday an so have a home that will do these fish justice till i get my big tanks done at home
personally I AM GETTING MORE THAN A LITTLE SICK OF PEOPLE WHO DONT CONSIDER THAT AT PRESENT THE FISH ARE VERY MUCH AT HOME IN THEIR TANK AS THEY WILL BE WHEN I REHOME THEM IN MY BIGGER TANKS WHICH I WILL HAVE READY WHEN THEY NEED THEM OR EVEN MORE DONT CONSIDER THAT THE FISH ARE IN MUCH BIGGER TANKS THAN WHAT THEY CAME IN
for example tell me a 9 month old pacu is not at home in a 180g tank when it came out of a 55g

im going to give you a quote from the very page you link to vader
I adopted a pangasius catfish that was originally about 15 inches and 12 years old. She was in a 210 gal tank and would freak out and jump out of the much to small tank, leaving a massive mess behind her. I brought her home and put her in an agricultural tub while looking for a more suitable home for her. My family fell in love with her and when I finally found an affordable 500 gallon tank I bought it right away. The only problem, it wouldn't fit in the basement. Guess what, now we are currently in our new home (with bilco doors to the basement - yes we moved for the fish) and Rebuttal is in her 500 gallon tank. She is happy as can be and is now about 27 inches, so we will be looking for another bigger tank for her in the future.

that is from the comments on the very page you link to and it says it better than i ever could and yes im not attached to my home and would gladly sell my house an lot to be able to afford a bigger better house for example my wife has found an acerage with house quonset and 3 car garage 15 minutes outta town we find out how much it is in a week so perhaps i might move to the country

Nice tanks and fish! I love the scats.
Wow! Seven kids! Where do you find the time to take care of those tanks? I find it hard with just three!!lol
It is very difficult to understand your posts and frankly, I have no intention of wasting time trying to convince people who are dead-set in their ways to consider different care for their specimens. The latest photos speak for themselves.
FYI , I selected that link as it had a decent photo; I make no claim to the fidelity of its content.
As I said, they are your ways and they are controversial to many here. If you're, "...MORE THAN A LITTLE SICK OF PEOPLE..." don't post and please don't shout. Sharing tank shots, etc. opens one up to both compliments and to criticism. Those criticisms are always intended to aid the specimen in obtaining/maintaining optimum health.
As always, good luck to you and to your specimens.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION SIR
the link you chose for the picture also happens to have a womens testimonial of how they rehomed said fish and found a tank that was of the right size and then since the tank would not fit in their home they moved so that they could have a tank big enough for it
so for your information before you think to try to downplay others perhaps you should consider that some people actually upgrade their tank plans when it so happens that they get given fish that will need bigger tanks
FOR YOUR INFORMATION
by the time im done setting up my fish tanks and fish room having the needed tank space will not be an issue how sad people like you choose to try to lay smack down on people without getting the necessary background as to what the person is actually about for example when i finish building my central tank in my basement it will bee 1198.6 gallons according to the ac conversion calculator
further i will have no tank under 55g and will have multiple tanks over 150g
while you may feel qualified to judge my aquaria practices maybe you also think i should have told the person to keep his sharks in the filthy 55g they came out of rather than getting them into a 75g plus tank which they are in at present maybe i should have told him to keep them in the fresh water rather than in the 6ppt brackish mix i have them in now maybe at this present moment the fish fit the tank they are in the tank is 1.5 times the width of the fish ample enough for them to turn around in and the tank is 5.2 times the length of the fish also ample enough now when i plant then in a 180g in about 4months or so will that be big enough for their actual present size at that time yes and when the time comes that i drop them in my 1200g tank at home with the pacu will that tank be big enough for them to spend the rest of their life in or maybe i go one further and knock down some non structural walls in my basement and build my tank that i want to do which will be 25 feet long 4 feet high an 5 feet wide a tank that will be 3745.61 gallons when done
at the end of this matter would you rather that i sit back and leave these fish in the hands of those who have them in tanks not nearly big enough for them and further leave them with these people who see their fish as a hassle not a blessing to have further to leave them with these people who have no plans to upgrade to make a better home i would think not
so think what you wish friend but when im done building my tanks in the future please dont be one of those who lines up to slap me on the back for a job well done as that will not be acceptable
its so funny i have been in business for over 10 years and the same people who tried to dissuade at the start and the same people who talked all kinds of smack about the cost i was having to pay to be in business are the very same people who now think they can say job well done now that success has come HMMMMMMMM i think not

Those are Pangasius catfish (aka Iridescent 'sharks')
I just want to agree with this and I notice your scats are in the same tank as the sharks. While Columbian sharks are fresh at birth, maturing into brackish and ultimately becoming a high-end brackish to full saltwater needing fish, the iridescent sharks are a catfish that are fully freshwater. I supposed they can stand bouts of salt for medicinal purposes but keeping them in a brackish tank full time might lead to their demise.

10-25-2008, 3:37 PM
are you planning on setting up a full saltwater tank for your silver scats?
they will need full salt as they get bigger.
I used to keep mine at a specific gravity of 1.020.
brackish water is only good when they are young.

well then i shall move the sharks to my 180g at the university today so as to take them out of the brackish tank netting them is gonna be the fun part
and to answer about the scats yes they will be moving steadily up to a full sw set up
i wanted to start them off in brackish and move the salinity up

now for the night mare of my life considering my basement earlier this summer filled with water and made a mess outta things this was even worse to find
i go downstairs go to my sink to start the waterchange and i see plaster all over the counter everywhere and there is water all over the place i look up an see this mess has fallen from the roof so i go up right away to check the tank upstairs nope not from there so i track its location and its from the sink upstairs so i go check that nope its dry so i get my hammer cause i know this when the plaster falls from the roof the rain is not far behind

if i could slap the plumber who did this hatchet job when they replace the galvanized steel i would looks to me like the person tried to solder a wet pipe
now my scat tank just barely missed gettin plaster right in it so to my great dismay i realize i have to do the switch now cause this leak is dripping fast so here are the pics of my 2 hour fast as i can flip the tanks

In the picture with the knife fish, I'm pretty sure those are clown knife fish, not ghost. Ghost knife fish are completely black and have a white band at the end of their tails, in your picture, it looks silver with black spots, definitely a clown knife fish, unless you were talking about something else?

The small unidentified fish looks like a jewel to me - those juvenile mbuna are about perfect size for the crayfish to eat btw. You may be lucky, and not have it predate on 'em but I would not trust a crayfish that size with fish that size. They sneak up and eat 'em when the fish rest during the night.

Ugh.
Nice pick up on the old tank from the retirement home... shame the MTS and golds were neglected.
Coler makes a good point re: the crayfish. Do you know the species of crayfish (some are more aggressive towards tankmates than others)? I've seen some clean out an entire tank of fish while others keep to themselves and forage for detris alone.

Ugh.
why ugh
and as far as the lfs dude told me it is a blue crayfish but has lost lots of its color i would think due to diet i hope to be able to restore its color as far as it attacking fish i have only really caught it with one fish ill definitely watch this in this tank if it gets some of the fish or one of them ill move it to another of my tanks at home but in the time ive had it has not been to agressive
