View Full Version : My rams just spawned...during a water change!

What were they thinking!!!

I figured they were getting close to spawning, they've become exceedingly close the last few weeks. Can't believe their first spawning attempt was during a water change. They are just in my community tank now, so doubtful any of the eggs were going to survive anyway, but man, talk about poor planning.

Thanks!

As mentioned, I'm not really expecting any to make it. Water parameters had to be all over the place. Tap is extremely soft water, 7.4 pH, with no nitrate. Immediately following a water change, GH and KH are boosted to 6 and 4, respectively, and pH drops to 6.4 via co2.....

Who knows...

As I told my wife, if they did it once, they'll do it again. I have a 5g tank sitting in my closet waiting to be set up as a breeder. I wasn't planning on giving it a try until December(I got the Rams in June, so figured I'd give them 6 months), but now, maybe in a few weeks...

yea you might wanna setup that 5 and get it cycling cause rams will tend to their eggs so you may be getting some fry soon that will be alive and well

Sometimes you just can't plan these things.

When it happened, I had no idea. I was rearrnaging some driftwood not 2" away from the eggs and replanting some that lobelia. I thought the rams were acting weird, so I took a closer look, and, voila!

One of my ram pair spawns weekly they have a 10 to themselves . The other pair has spawned once in the last month that I've noticed they are in my com. tank so the eggs probably have been eaten.I have about 40-50 babys now that are about a 1/2 inch. Good luck hope they make it.

I've heard before that for many fish the changing conditions of a water change can induce spawning. I imagine it's a lot like the cleansing effect of rainfall.
