I am going to be moving my 36g stock into an empty 55g in the next month or so. I'd like to get it planted and get new lights for it first. I was previously running the tank with two whisper 40s. Will this be adequate filtration for a tropical community in a 55? I also have a magnum 350 the is dissasembled and needs some tubing. If I can figure out how to get it running, I could use that in place of one of the whispers. I would rather not do so because I have nowhere to hide it. Also, if I do go with the HOBs, could I add a large sponge filter? I've never used these before, so I'm not really familiar with them.

sweet!!!!!!!

It would also be sweet!!!!!!! to get your mag running........

If you are going with CO2 for the plants, I would pass on the HOBs and use the Mag 350 canister...

From my own personal experiences, whispers are kinda crappy filters. I get usually 6 months - 1 year outta them before i start having issues with the motor. My thought is to get your mag working (if you can) and use that, along with a HoB of your choice (aquaclears are really worth the money). On my 55 gallon, I have a Rena XP1 canister and a Emperor Biowheel 400 (which is roughly 680gph). I am overfiltering b/c i plan to load the tank rather heavily and I do not have any live plants in it. Just think about your ultimate goals and bioload in the tank. I shoot for 10x water turnover per hour in my tanks. Good luck!

I have had two whispers running perfect over seven years now!

Maybe I am just unlucky with them  I have tried them more than once and within a year or so they all end up breakin down on me.
