My boyfriend says that I can't put a heater in an acrylic tank. Is this true? And if it is how do I heat my tank this winter? :wall: :wall: :wall: :eek3:

Pour some warm water intoa plastic cup. Only 80F mind you and see how it affects the cup. Not at all or Tupperware would be out of business.

It really depends on the type of fish you have. Goldfish =no heater. Tropical fish=heater required unless your house stays at 80 degrees all the time.

My 5 gallon hex betta tank is acrylic - with heater - no issues with it.
Should be fine. Not sure why he would think no heater in an acrylic tank?
Weird. :)

the temperature required to melt acrylic will boil your fish, and more than likely kill your heater

Got the Visitherm, working on the other part!
well i was under the impression that acrylic tanks doing a better job of retaining heat versus the glass tanks. therefore, the acrylic tanks can usually pass by a heater, which seems to be a significant advantage in the long term. perhaps i am mistaken though. i do know that when i was dating someone who had an eclipse system in her dorm room, she said the temperature in tank was usually constant sho she never used a heater, just a thermometer. maybe your boyfriend is under the same idea as me. if i am mistaken, perhaps a small heater might help.
edit; hmm, on second thought the differrence between what i gave an example of and the thread's problem are possible apples and oranges, as an eclipse system is closed and an open top acrylic tank might need a heater. still don't know though.

Any fish tank without a heater glass or acrylic will stay at room temperature so unless your house stays at a constant temperature day, night summer and winter a heater is needed.

Not true.I have 2 acrylic 5 gallon betta tanks. In the summer our house is about 70* when the AC is on.Both tanks have heaters, btw. However,I noticed this summer that one of the heaters had come unpluged.I checked the thermometer and it was still at 79* so I figured it must have recently come unpluged.I was a little curious so I left it unpluged for the rest of the day to see how fast the temp would drop. After 9 hours the temp was still 79*.I think the light in the tank keeps it at a steady 79*.One night I left it off just to see what the temp in the morning would be.It was only 77*,in a house that is 70*.I then started to notice when the light on the heater would come on,it only comes on at night when the light is off.I do however think this would only occur in a small tank.I if you have tropical fish,a heater is something you need to have before you buy your fish.

hmmm... so your wallet is more important than your fish?
now dont get me wrong.. my wallet is more important too, but i wouldnt deprive my fish of ideal living conditions in order to save a couple bucks.
welcome to the hobby of aquatics.. it never has been and never will be a cheap hobby.

Remember, your lights heat your tank as well.

Not Everybody Understand Heaters and Tanks and they think that it will heat up like geysers
Once Ur BF Understands how low the heating is he would agree about how it wont affect the tank and never switch a heater on without Water
If Your House Temperature Stays Warm it is still advisable to have a heater as backup even though it will never be on because the temp is above the heaters settings
But For Some Reason Should the home get cold at least your fish wont feel it :)

Yes, but she can't discuss those in a public forum. Kids might be reading.
