View Full Version : White slime killing plants?

Hello,
My plants have recently begun to die off; I have very few left, as you can see from the photo. They were fine for months, then I had a major bacterial bloom and a columnaris infection that wiped out all of my fish, except the Betta. The plants seem to have been affected by something during that time, because they began to be covered in short, stringy white fluff, usually around the base of the plant near the roots and on the leaf tips--a very small amount of this substance is on the rocks too. It is sort of stringy and slimy and fluffy at the same time. As soon as I see it on a plant, the plant begins to die. The leaf tips turn transparent and then rot--usually within 2-3 days. Whatever is killing them is extremely aggressive--I brought a new plant home a few weeks ago and it was dead within five days.
There is also strange slimy white blob on my onion plant (see the last photo--sorry, it's a bit blurry) that appeared yesterday. I don't know if this slime is what's killing the plants (a parasitic mold?), or if it's just a symptom of a different problem. My fish are fine, no excess nitrates and ammonia. I do a 10-20% water change once a week.

Can we get a measure of the following please:

Ammonia

Nitrite

Nitrate

pH

Tank temperature

What exactly is your remaining stock and what shape are they in? Any sign of disease? What size tank? Welcome to the forums! Sorry to hear about this trouble.

What kelvin rating is the bulb on the light??

Also it looks like you have(or should i say had) crypts which are notoriously known for melting easily. As long as the root stays alive the plant may recover.
