Hey all,

So I got my 150G tank filled up with water yesterday and I have it up and running. Most of the equipment was purchased used with the stand and canopy including the pump. I have a mag drive pump in the wet dry being used to circulate the water back into the tank. I'm not sure of the size of the pump as it came with the system, but is was previously being used in the same situation in a reef set up.

The pump is really, really loud, like annoyingly loud. Are they normally this loud? I would assume they are not supposed to be this loud? I have some cotton baffle stuff underneath it that it sits on in the wet dry as at 1st I thought maybe it was the vibration from the pump onto the bottom of the wet drys acrylic flooring. This helped a little bit, but it's still really really loud. Even when I pick it up it's still that loud so I no it's the pump itself.

If I need a new pump what do you all recommend that is quite and efficient for this size of a tank? I need it to be submersible and not too much longer than a Mag drive due to room.

On the end of the mag drive that sucks in the water I have a pvc pipe with a ball joint valve. If a go with a different pump that is longer, do I really need that on there if I just unplug the pump when I want to do water changes instead of turning of the water flow at the valve?

Please let me know as the noise is driving me and my wife crazy. :wall:

Thank you very much

You sure it is not the noise from the return flow?

As it is submersible you really do have a problem if you can hear the noise as the water in the sump not only cools the pump but also significantly damps the noise.

If the pump is contiguous to a sump wall try moving it to the interior of the sump.

I cannot help with the remainder as I only have experience with external pumps.

Why do either?

The sump volume should be at least 25% of the tank volume.

A pure siphon or a Python will work much better from the water surface in the tank than from the water surface in the sump.

Just suck out the tank water until the suction line only has a couple of inches of water over it and then refill into the sump after adding Prime.
