Hi there. I had 6 neons in a 10g hex with an aquaclear 20 filter for about two months (fishless cycled before I added them). Then we went through a home renovation and a few weeks after I moved the tank upstairs I was getting ammonia spikes...though was registriting no nitrite or nitrate. When the renovations were over I said what the heck and got a 37 gallon. Now, I have the 37 gallon set-up with new substrate, the old filter running on it, along with a new aquaclear 50 (I plan to run them together for a few months to help kickstart the beneficial bacteria in the new filter, etc).
The 37g has been up and running for two weeks, I'm down to five neons (filter accident - I think), and ammonia is registering at zero. I intend this tank to be a small fish only (less than 2" fish) freshwater community tank). PH here hovers around neutral. Here are my questions:
1. How soon before I can add a few more neons?
2. What other small fish would work well? (I've considering harlequin raspboras, maybe some glowlight tetra's).
3. I'd prefer to keep the tank a little understocked - how many of these types of fish can I really add? (Don't worry, I won't add them all at once!)
4. I currently have only fake plants (mostly silk) - are there are any floating plants that are fake? I understand neons like a darker aquarium.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks!
