My discus pair bred again for teh third time in 2 weeks. This time I got another tank setup and ready (20G LONG) and thiinking of moving the eggs from the branch into the barebottom tank for it to hatch? Is this a good solution?

I wnat to do this b/c my pair of discus keeps eating the eggs. :help:

If I move it, what shoudl I do?

I just had a pair lay their 10 batch of eggs. They have not gotten it right yet either. The babies feed off of the slime of the parents. It is easier to let the parents get it right. Dont forget the eggs may not be fertile or the water may be too hard to let them hatch.

if the water is hard, how would i soften it? I'm not a chemical additive kind of guy, but I want to see what ever I can do to hatch these eggs, bc the parents ate all the eggs again. Hopefully they will lay again in the next few days.

You cant add to the water to make it softer. I am currently reclaiming water from my dehumidifier and filtering it through a brita water filter. Water vapor will not have any dissolved minerals in it.

people breed discus in water with 7.8 PHs. I wouldn't worry about it.

pH is not a measure of hardness.

Hungriee....While you certainly could manage to get the discus eggs to hatch without the parents, unfortunately there's no way for you to raise fry without the parents involvement or a surrogate discus parent involved. Discus fry must feed off of the parents slime coat for their first nutrition for a while. There's no getting around that and if that doesn't happen the fry will die. They will starve to death.:(

You need to know the TDS of the water..Over 120 might be to high.If its too high the eggs will not get fertlized properly and the parents may sense it and give up quickly.Diluting with Ro water is most common way to get it to the right perameter.GH should be in the 3-5 range also.

THe eggs finally hatched =D.. Only 10 wigglers so far (Little Orange Eggs with strings). The mom moved the eggs to another branch where the wigglers are resting. Hopefully all goes well.

It was still in the 50G and the wigglers are probably dead b/c I couldn't find any of them. I have cardinals/cories and 3 zebra nerites in the tank.
