How much flow could a 1 1/2" standpipe accommodate?

Also, could someone give me the names of some decent return pumps. I would like to replace the one in my sump. I want to increase the flow a little bit, not sure how many GPH I can/ do have, but thinking I need a little more. Current pump is a Rio 2100 with a 4 1/2 foot head 75 gallon display and 30L sump!

If you want added flow, do so with a closed loop (if you have it pre-drilled for one) or add powerheads. Don't use your return for the purpose of additional flow--it just cuts down on the efficiency of filtration devices, especially protein skimmers.

BTW, around 1300 gph for 1.5".

Do you think a 695 gph pump at a 4 1/2 foot head (probably pumping around 250 gph) is enough running through my sump?

Also, I have heard lots of bad about the rio line of pumps. If I wanted to replace it what would you suggest?

Thanks Amp..I was hoping you would answer!!!!

Most shoot for ~3-8 tank volumes per hour. More if you are running peripheral devices from the return pump, like reactors, chillers, etc.

So When I replace this pump i just need to make sure I stay under 600 gallons per hour in order to keep this under 8 x and hour through the sump. I am currently at 3 x hour which is on the low end. I am not wanting to increase this for flow in the display, I just feel there is not enough flow through the sump. Like I said, my current pump is on the way out so it needs to be replaced... if you were me, what pump and flow rate would you use?

There's no hard and fast rules, just generalizations. 250 gph is a bit low, depending upon what is being fed by it. I always oversize my pump and throttle it down with a ball valve. I apologize if I made it sound as though you need to get a small pump--what I meant was that you just won't need 100% of its flow (again, depending upon what it is feeding). I would honestly shoot for something like a mag 9.5 or an eheim (either of the upper gph models). Personally, I use a mag 12, but I am feeding two separate reactors, plus there is substantial head loss from fittings and a check valve. A mag 12 would also work--you just won't need all of it. The good thing is, however, if you DO need it, you have the capabilities to do so.

Thank you so much... I am a dope when it comes to water and plumbing!

The only thing that the return pump does, is return water to the tank, no other pieces of equipment.

So do you personally think that the Eheim 1260, would be enough? At 4 1/2 feet it says around 500 gph...would I still need to back it off a little?

Thanks so much!

500 gph seems like a well-rounded number. I think you'll be fine with that :).

Hey Amp...
What do you think would be the best way to plumb this to get water back to the tank?

i got the 1262 just so you know, and its the return line to the aquarium in question here...
would this work, or no?

That would work just fine for your application. Just remember to include a ball valve somewhere along the way, since you won't need the full power of the 1262. Excellent pump choice--you won't be disappointed with it.

Oh, and don't forget to use hose clamps ;). Been there.

where can i get a ball valve that will work with this application? is that something i can get at home depot, or will i have to order that online?

You should be able to find it just fine at Lowe's or Home Depot--whichever is more convenient. I know my local Lowe's has more plumbing parts, etc. than any of the local Home Depots. If you are in a bind on finding the right pieces, you can order them online. What you'll need will vary with what sort of plumbing material you decide to use.
